Masse book reviewVIETNAM WARRIOR VOICES
The full seriousness of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) was first explored in depth during and after the Vietnam War. More than mere “shell shock” as it was called during world war II, PTSD was recognized as having serious, even debilitating effects, both long and short term for returning veterans. It remains a serious issue today for veterans returning from the Middle East.
Now, author/journalist/professor Mark H. Masse presents another side of trauma—a phenomenon known as Post Traumatic Growth. Citing mid 1990’s university research which resulted in a “Post Traumatic Growth Inventory” and author Jim Rendon’s 2015 book UPSIDE, Masse explores post-traumatic growth with four prominent Vietnam War vet-authors-- Philip Caputo, John Del Vecchio, Robert Olen Butler and Tim O’Brien.
Through four compelling chapters Masse skillfully narrates each author’s back story while interspersing his in-depth, first-person interviews with the authors. No stranger to the subject of Trauma –Masse’s book Trauma Journalism: On Deadline in Harm’s Way was published in (2011)—Masse is at ease in his interviews, and draws candid and revealing responses from these best-selling authors.
Masse, a leading advocate and practitioner of literary journalism and creative non-fiction (He is a professor of Literary Journalism at Ball State University.) creates four distinct “short stories” each of which is entertaining, enlightening and emotional. They are not always easy stories. The sights, sounds—and scars of war are awful to behold and bear, and each author still confronts the trauma they endured.
Yet, they each came through it and emerged as talented, successful artists. Allowing the authors to use their own voices, Masse lets the reader decide—was it post-traumatic growth, inspiration, that elusive intangible called art?
Masse is a skilled, experienced writer who knows how to present his material. With this slim chronicle he has brought an important message of hope in the field of trauma by opening our eyes to Post Traumatic Growth and he’s done it with great storytelling. This is a good read.

Vietnam Warrior Voices Life Stories of Philip Caputo John Del Vecchio Robert Olen Butler Tim O'Brien Mark H Masse 9780692854655 Books Reviews
Prof. Masse has written compelling profiles of four Vietnam veterans who are also well-known authors. Their stories and writings about Vietnam offer insights into the trauma and tragedy but also redemptive experiences that Vietnam gave them. All four of them were able to draw from war-time experiences to develop their creativity and insight into writing about the human condition. The author displays an understated respect and admiration for these veterans and authors by telling their life stories with vivid detail and compelling narrative.
Excellent insight
Very touching insight into the lasting effects of violence on the folks that wrote and witnessed this war. In contrast to our current socially-obsessed gonzo journalism, these authors display considerable courage going back to write about the worst experiences of their (and of most American civilians) lives. For history buffs and anyone interested in the long term consequences of violence.
Excellent read in many respects. Part biography, part history, part psychological study, this book discovers combat veterans who served in Vietnam and later became successful writers. Each of the four writers experienced the brutality of war. They came from different backgrounds. Their inner most responses to the war are reflected in both their writings and their adjustments to life after war. The four writers examined by the author react to their lives post-Vietnam in philosophical and contemplative ways that are reflected in their books and their lives. What the author has done is to lay bare how four young American combat servicemen adjusted to life after war. Their writings were both therapeutic and a way to convey the weight that fighting had on their psyche. It is a thoughtful essay that is not judgmental. We are offered the experiences of war fighters adjusting to life as adults after living through the horrors of war. This book is informative and instructive particularly with the issues that our recent war fighters have had to face post-combat. More than a few times, I found myself re-reading pages of the book.
